Multiple brush fires continue to burn in southern West Virginia

UPDATE: Friday, March 22, 2024 | GHENT, WV (WVNS) — According to the West Virginia Division of Forestry, the fires in Wyoming, McDowell, Monroe, and Raleigh counties all have containment lines.

An additional fire was reported in the Forest Hill area of Summers County. The size of the fire is unknown at this time.

A member of the West Virginia Division of Forestry stated that unknown fire departments and members of the West Virginia Division of Forestry are working on getting containment lines on the Summers County fire.

GHENT, WV (WVNS) — Brush fires continue to burn in multiple counties in southern West Virginia.

According to the West Virginia Division of Forestry, brush fires are burning in multiple southern West Virginia counties. There are three brush fires in Wyoming County: one at Coal Mountain and two at RD Bailey Lake, two in McDowell County: one around Old 52 near Iaeger and one around Little Slate near Raysal, one in Monroe County near Nickel Mill Road, and two in Raleigh County: one near Spruce Mountain and a small fire near Clear Creek.

Five active brush fires reported in Wyoming, McDowell, and Monroe Counties

Of the brush fires in Wyoming County around Big Branch at RD Bailey Lake, one is more than 45 acres and is uncontained, the second is 75 acres and is 25 percent contained. The brush fire at the Coal Mountain location in Wyoming County is 100 acres and 80 percent contained.

The McDowell County brush fire around Old 52 near Iaeger is about 127 acres and is 80 percent contained, and the fire around Little Slate near Rysal is active but there are no numbers at this time.

The brush fire in Monroe County is near Nickel Mill Road, and is 41 acres and uncontained.

Out of the two fires in Raleigh County, one near Spruce Mountain is 24 acres and 75 percent contained, and there is a small fire near Clear Creek that continues to try and restart.
