MSP: 170 free gun safes handed out in 2 days

PAW PAW, Mich. (WOOD) — After two days of distributing free firearm safes, troopers say they have handed out all the safes.

The Michigan State Police Paw Paw Post on Monday, in partnership with Bronson and Borgess Trauma Injury Prevention Services, announced an initiative to provide free pistol safes for gun owners.

By Wednesday, troopers said all 170 gun safes and 49 long gun cable locks had been given out.

“Through their efforts seeking and obtaining the grant funds, unquestionably this partnership has made hundreds of households in Kalamazoo and Van Buren County safer,” said 1st Lt. Scott Ernstes, commander of the Paw Paw Post, in a statement. “We are thankful to have been able to support and be involved in this important project.”

MSP does not have currently have plans to get more safes, but it says more long gun cable locks will be available by late April.
