New MSCS superintendent holds “Fireside Chat” to address first 100 days

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Shelby County Schools’ new top boss sat down with people in Frayser for a one-on-one “Fireside Chat” on Thursday.

Parents and educators got to talk with the district’s superintendent about what to expect in her first 100 days and address some of their concerns.

Memphis Business Academy and other schools hosted Memphis LIFT, an educational advocacy group, and MSCS new superintendent, Dr. Marie Faegins, for a fireside chat.

“I’m glad that you are here and I hope there is something that is said that gives you a little more hope to hold on to as we put some things into action,” said Feagins.

Dr. Marie Feagins sat down with more than 100 parents and students along with Memphis LIFT’s executive director Sara Carpenter.

The duo discussed items like the superintendent’s first 100 days and her plans for the future as she released her transition team, and on that list is Carpenter herself.

“These next 30 days I will spend with the transition team. They’ll spend time with each other looking at policies, looking at the money, looking at previous plans, looking in schools,” she said.

Memphis LIFT has highlighted work that already has been done in Dr. Faegins’ first 100 days. In a recent progress report, parents and students can see their child’s reading grade level.

“She made sure that, that reading level is on that report card, and again, that never happened in this city, but she asked me and she listened,” said Carpenter.

Not more than 10 days ago a teenager was shot and killed outside the Douglas Community Center. That shooting and others were brought up in today’s fireside chat.

Feagins said parents can expect more visibility from officers, updated security measures, and she re-affirmed her stance on arming teachers.

“I will say it again. I will never support. I am unwavering in my stance that arming teachers is not the way to secure our buildings,” said Feagins.

By the end of the chat with Carpenter was a chance to hear from parents themselves, and each question was answered.

Feagins said you can expect much more to come as she continues working to elicit change In her first 100 days.
