MPD releases new details on Beale Street shooting suspect

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — New details about a suspect are uncovered following a shooting on Beale Street this weekend that left three men injured and sent patrons running for their lives.

The suspect is still on the loose, but Memphis Police released video footage and photos of the suspect. Investigators say he was part of the shooting that left three security guards injured around 3:30 Saturday morning.

A 22-year-old woman says she witnessed the shooting and helped one of those injured.

“They threw up some gang signs and then they all like ran in different directions,” the witness said. “There was a girl who came up to me and said, ‘Hey I think you need to leave. They’re about to come shoot.'”

This comes after a group of men at the Green Room, part of Tin Roof, started fighting and security had them leave.

Moments later, the witness says she heard seven to eight gunshots as she ran to safety.

Police report witnesses on the scene told them they heard the man tell another man to grab his gun from his car. He then reappeared and started shooting at the building, striking the security guards.

“He got shot in the leg and I was holding a belt around his leg to help with the bleeding,” the witness said. “I’m so saddened that it was them but thankful at the same time that not a lot of other people got hurt.”

Detectives documented at least 20 shell casings on the scene.

The witness says she is now scared to go back there.

“Yeah, honestly, I’m always afraid to go back but it’s Memphis. I love it here so much but the crime is just getting worse,” she said. “Honestly you always just kinda have to be prepared for the worst when it comes to those things, especially downtown.”

She also has a message for those resorting to violence.

“Talk it out. What is the point of using a gun? You’re changing your life and someone else’s life when you do that and it just seems like it’s always everybody’s first response just, ‘Oh let me go shoot this person so they know how upset I am.’ and it’s childish to me,” she said.

In a statement, Tin Roof says it has confirmed the security guards are okay and are working with police.
