MPD: Man shoots victim because he ‘wasn’t going to argue with him anymore’

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is facing an attempted first-degree murder charge after police say he got tired of arguing with another rooming house tenant, so he got his gun and shot him.

Willie Jones, 73, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and employment of a firearm during an attempt to commit a dangerous felony following an incident that took place on May 20.

Officers arrived at the scene on Glory Circle, off Person Avenue in South Memphis, regarding a man shot.

When officers arrived, they were met by a victim who was a tenant at the rooming house. According to the police report, officers witnessed the victim suffering from a gunshot wound.

He told officers that another tenant, Willie Jones, shot him.

Police took Jones into custody. He decided to waive his rights and speak to investigators.

He told them that he and the victim were arguing in a common room of the rooming house. Jones said that the victim had allegedly accused him of telling the landlord about things that were happening within the home.

Jones told officers that “he wasn’t going to argue with the victim anymore,” so he went to his bedroom and grabbed his firearm, a .38-cal. revolver. He then told investigators “I shot him” after he returned to the room.

He added that he “could have killed him (the victim)” because he was an “excellent marksman” and “didn’t miss when shooting.”

Jones is being held on a $150,000 bond.
