Mount Charleston’s elementary school faces permanent closure following flood damage

LAS VEGAS (KALS) — The Clark County School District is recommending the permanent closure of Mount Charleston’s only public school.

Earl B. Lundy Elementary has been closed since August 2023 when it was damaged in storms and flooding caused by Tropical Storm Hilary. According to a CCSD letter sent to parents on May 10, the closure is due to the expense of rebuilding the school.

Since last year, the students, which numbered around a dozen, have been attending Indian Springs Elementary School which is around a 45-minute school bus ride. The CCSD letter said the students will continue to attend Indian Springs Elementary which allows the Mount Charleston community to maintain a cohesive, feeder school alignment and the opportunity for siblings to attend the same school. Mount Charleston middle and high school students attend schools in Indian Springs.

Interim Superintendent Brenda Larsen-Mitchell said the recommendation to close the school will go before the Board of School Trustees at a regular meeting in June.
