Motorcyclist dead, child airlifted to trauma center after collision in San Bernardino County

A motorcyclist died and six van occupants were injured after a violent collision in San Bernardino County on Saturday evening.

According to a release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the collision occurred around 6:10 p.m. on State Highway 18 near Quinnault Road in Apple Valley.

Deputies from the Apple Valley sheriff’s station arrived on scene and discovered that a motorcycle had broadsided a van in the intersection, SBSD said.

“A white Toyota Sienna traveling northbound on Quinnault Road was making a left turn on State Highway 18 [when] the motorcyclist broadsided the van,” authorities said. “The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”

He was identified as 39-year-old Apple Valley resident Matthew Hicks.

All six occupants of the van were transported to local hospitals for treatment; one juvenile was airlifted to a local trauma center, the sheriff’s department said.

State Highway 18 was closed for several hours between Central Road and Navajo Road following the crash while deputies processed the scene and interviewed witnesses.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Major Accident Investigation Team is looking into the cause of the crash.
