Mother vs. son street race ends in fatal crash, California police say

A 54-year-old woman is dead and her son is facing manslaughter charges after a street race between the two turned tragic, San Bernardino police said Wednesday.

Algetta Strother and Steven Strother, 26, were driving in separate vehicles at high speed on Ninth Street and Waterman Avenue around 10:15 p.m. Monday, when police say they both tried to pass another driver in a Toyota Camry, the San Bernardino Sun reported.

Steven Strother collided with the Camry, causing his mother to lose control of her SUV and roll over, hitting a tree, a standpipe, a light pole, and throwing her out of the vehicle, according to the outlet.

She died at the scene, CBSLA reported, and a 21-year-old woman riding in the passenger seat was taken to the hospital.

All passengers in the Camry were unharmed, the outlet reported.

Steven Strother was also uninjured, but he was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and of driving under the influence, according to KTLA.

Police said the crash is still being investigated but that “alcohol and speed are considered to be factors,” KTLA reported.
