Mother of Daleville teen killed recounts night he died
DALEVILLE, Ala. (WDHN) — It’s been a rough few days for, Rosie Serna, who never thought she would have to plan her son Jacob Wade Smith’s funeral — he was killed in a domestic dispute early Tuesday morning.
“It’s one of the most difficult things I have ever had to go through at this point and it’s still not over the hardest thing is having to make his arrangements,” Serna said.
Smith was killed at a home in the 100 block of Woodland Drive in Daleville. His mother said he came home from hanging out with a friend.
Officials say Smith and some family members got into an unknown dispute after midnight Tuesday morning and the dispute turned violent.
His mother recounted the tragic night.
“I heard a commotion and then I heard a bang and then I ran out back and my son had been shot,” She said. “I called 911 and we did everything we could but it was too late he passed away with me and both of his sisters by his side.”
Serna said her free-spirited son would often leave home for days without notice but would constantly check in with her.
However, she said he suffered from bipolar disorder where he would sometimes come home being normal or have outbursts and become defiant at times. During those times, she called the police to help calm him down, who she thanked. But she says it’s been a hassle getting him long-term help.
“I have desperately sought help for those issues but I was mostly denied the appropriate help that he needed,” Serna said.
Serna says Smith was her youngest of four. He was likable, smart, artistic, and always made friends who he loved a lot. He also dreamed big.
“He wanted to be an MMA fighter he liked Conner Mcgregor or if that didn’t work out he wanted to be a bodybuilder,” She added.
Now, Serna is having to bury her son which has been a financial burden on her family a GoFundMe page with a goal of $10,000 has been set up to help give him a proper service.
“I love my son regardless of what anybody has said or speculated and there wasn’t anything I wouldn’t have done for him and I would like to thank everybody who has donated,” Serna said.
The case is an active investigation.
