CLEVELAND (WJW) – On the official first day of spring, we’re definitely thinking more about sunshine. Each day, sunset is getting later and later!

According to Fox 8 Meteorologist Alexis Walters, March 19 is the official first day of spring with the vernal equinox at 11:06 p.m. and a sunset at 7:38 p.m.

“As the earth is on a tilt, every single day, the sun rises and sets at a different time, even if it’s just by seconds,” Meteorologist Alexis Walters said.

The sunset will continue to get later, even just by seconds, until the summer solstice on June 20, the ‘official’ start to the summer season.

In fact, the day of the total solar eclipse in our area will be the first time our sunset is as late as 8 p.m.

On June 20, or the longest day of the year, we can look forward to sunrise at 5:53 a.m. and a sunset as late as 9:04 p.m.

By the end of March, we will see sunsets as late as 7:51 p.m. and sunsets as late as 8:24 p.m. in April, according to Walters.

Each year in Ohio, daylight saving time starts the second Sunday of March. This year, we set our clocks an hour forward on March 10 at 2 a.m. Daylight saving time automatically gives us more evening sunlight, with a sunset at nearly 7:30 p.m.

Daylight saving time will come to an end when we set our clocks back an hour on Nov. 3.

According to local Astronomer Jay Reynolds, during the spring equinox, the sun’s most direct vertical rays will cross the equator.

Although this doesn’t mean equal day and equal night, which happened on March 16 this year, the sun will be up on Tuesday for about 12 hours and 10 minutes, according to Reynolds.
