Moped, Ford Escape crashed Monday night. Moped driver dead.

A Columbia man riding a moped died Monday following a crash.

Columbia police responded about 9 p.m. Monday in the area of Range Line Street and Blue Ridge road. Officers determined a Yada moped operated by Terry L. Walker, 64, of Columbia, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Rangeline when it collided with a northbound black 2011 Ford Escape.

Walker was thrown from the moped in the crash. The driver of the Escape was not identified by police. Witnesses did report two passengers running west from the Escape after the crash, police said. Police did not note if Walker was wearing a safety device, such as a helmet.

Walker and the driver of the Escape were transported to a local hospital, where Walker later died. The driver of the Escape had moderate injuries, police reported.

Police continue to investigate and ask the public to call the department at 573-874-7652 or CrimeStoppers at 573-875-8477 to remain anonymous.
