Montour Area Recreation Commission sites impacted by heavy rainfall

May 23—DANVILLE — The Montour Area Recreation Commission inspected the Hess Recreation Area following heavy rainfall Thursday morning.

No new damages were found along the park access road. The Mahoning Flats Trail network was fully submerged in low areas of the park, including the boardwalk area near the wildlife observation blind, according to a press release from the commission.

Two trees were down along the Hess Loop Trail between the Beaver Place Trailhead and the covered bridge, near trail miles 1.9 and 1.4. Several other trees were broken and likely to come down, the commission said.

There are several new slumps along the trail between miles 1.5 and 1.1, but none appear to threaten the trail itself.

Several new trees were wedges against the covered bridge, but high waters may knock them loose without the recreation commission intervening. Water levels in Mahoning Creek were receding by 10 am, the commission said.

Commission staff will be at the Hess Recreation Area tomorrow to conduct cleanup and further assess the situation. No facilities are closed at this time, the commission said Thursday.
