MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR)– Montgomery County officials say a wildfire along Fishers View Road in the Shawsville area appears to be moving away from homes.

Just before 6:00, county officials told people living in the area to leave as the fire began to burn. As of 9:00 p.m. Saturday, it had affected about 100 acres of land in the mountainous, rural area and was roughly 50% contained. Officials are asking drivers to avoid the area as crews continue their work along narrow, winding mountain roads.

County officials do not anticipate any further evacuation orders.

Several neighbors in the area of the fire told WFXR News they saw a lot of smoke, but no flames.

Winds were very gusty across Southwest and Central Virginia for much of the day Saturday.
