Monroe police: Area safe after homemade explosive device found in car at truck stop
MONROE — A homemade explosive device was found Thursday afternoon in a car after Monroe police arrested a fugitive.
The discovery led police to evacuate an area at the Pilot truck stop at 1100 N. Dixie Highway until a Michigan State Police bomb squad could arrive and render the area safe, the Monroe Public Safety Department said in a post on Facebook. The area was pronounced safe at about 5:10 p.m.
The Public Safety Department initially posted information about the situation on its social media accounts at about 3 p.m. Wednesday. After arresting the fugitive, a search of the person's car revealed a "suspicious device."
A state police bomb squad was called to the scene, and they arrived at about 4 p.m. Police kept people away from the area around the car as the truck stop remained open for business while officers worked at the scene.
"We appreciate the public’s assistance," the post said. "The investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending."
