Monett High School juniors unveil new student-made museum exhibits
MONETT, Mo. — The Monett Historical Museum is showcasing some brand new student-made exhibits
Adding to history, juniors at Monett High School debuted 18 brand new exhibits Thursday morning at the Monett Historical Museum that they designed and created themselves.
“The heart of this project is to preserve history and so that it is maintained in it’s — it’s here now. So people can come and you know when they come here they can read about the different stories,” said Amy Sampson, Monett English literature teacher.
It’s part of a year-long project that involved Monett English-lit, graphic design, go-caps, and construction students. Students were tasked with finding an important piece of Monett’s history.
They then had to do extensive research on it, to create exhibits that will permanently stay in the local history museum.
“Trying to find something from more than 100 years ago is really difficult, when we have such a small town too, so it was really difficult — and you really, really look so learning how to do all of that specifically and precisely, it really was a bit of a triumph but I pushed through and I was proud of myself by the end,” said Mikey Gross, Monett junior.
Gross, for example, made an exhibit about the history of the old Harvey House and Frisco Railroad that ran through town.
“We come down, I come down Broadway all of the time, I see everything of downtown. So, I’m like, I really was intrigued about where it all comes from and how we got to where we are now.”
A couple other exhibits include the extensive history on Monett schools and an explanation behind the town’s connection to the railroad. They can be found on display now and will stay in the museum, as part of its permanent collection.
