Mitsubishi-owned manufacturer to build $18 million expansion in Ohio

DELAWARE, Ohio (WCMH) — A Mitsubishi-owned manufacturer is expanding its footprint in Ohio by investing $18 million into a new factory dedicated to electric car components.

Luvata, a group company of Mitsubishi, will build the factory on a 21-acre site at 2039 Pittsburgh Drive in Delaware, less than a mile away from the manufacturer’s current factory built in 1999 across the street from the Delaware Municipal Airport. Construction started in February, with an expected opening this fall.

“Our roots and history in Delaware run deep,” said Dirk Greywitt, Luvata’s executive vice president. “The company first opened business in Delaware in 1966 at 801 Pittsburgh Drive and has been operating here ever since.”

The manufacturer is spending $18 million on equipment for the new factory, including state-of-the-art cold forming, machining and robotic automation, along with all of the support functions necessary to run the business. Luvata said the factory will meet growing demand for electric car components, along with electrical infrastructure upgrades, like green energy projects.

Brian Swank, Luvata’s director of business development, said the manufacturer specializes in copper, which “is an essential metal that is needed to build the next generation of electric vehicles, to install a nationwide network of charging stations, and to build out and upgrade our power distribution network.”

“We are happy and excited to participate, along with our customers, in the transformation from internal combustion engines to battery electric vehicles, and infrastructure improvements, that will take place during the next 10 years and beyond,” said Swank.

Luvata employs 125 people in Ohio. The expansion is set to add up to nearly 50 additional jobs during the next 10 years, as capacity is installed to meet demand.
