Minivan with dad, 3 kids inside caught in crossfire during Squirrel Hill drive-by shooting

A minivan with a father and his three children inside was caught in the crossfire during a shooting in Squirrel Hill on Tuesday evening.

The shooting happened in the 6300 block of Beechwood Boulevard around 5 p.m., and we’ve learned a man was grazed in the arm.

Witnesses told Channel 11 they heard multiple gunshots. Police said witnesses saw two vehicles traveling at high rates of speed.

“It’s horrible. It’s tragic. That’s terrifying,” said Brandon Cohen, who lives in the neighborhood.

Penny Means lives a few doors down the street from where the drive-by shooting happened.

“I was on my back porch, and I just heard like five gunshots right after another, and I heard a car zoom by really fast,” Means said “It was so scary.”

The shots rang out near the Community Day School where Joshua Neiss, 13, just finished a game of basketball with his friend.

“As I was walking home, I see one car drive by like 100 miles per hour and then I hear shots,” Joshua said. “I started running and ducking.”

Joshua said he was able to safely run home, but the disturbing ordeal left him shaken.

“It was really scary,” he said. “First, I was like, is this a terrorist kind of thing going into our school trying to shoot out our school because it is Israeli Independence Day.”

Police don’t have any suspects at this time. They’re asking witnesses who might have seen something or have any video of the shooting to call police headquarters at 412-323-7800.
