May 1—CONCORD — A Milford seventh-grader got the state CEO treatment as New Hampshire's Governor for a Day Wednesday.

Andrew Flockton, 12, presided with Gov. Chris Sununu at the head of the table for the two-hour meeting of the Executive Council.

With his parents looking on, Flockton asked state agency heads several questions about the contracts that came before the council.

He also invoked his right to audibly add his "aye" vote to many items on the agenda.

Later, Flockton met with Secretary of State David Scanlan and Business and Economic Affairs Commissioner Taylor Caswell and also made a stop at the State House Visitors' Center.

"I am fascinated in government, specifically at state and local levels and I enjoy campaigning for change which I feel is needed," Flockton wrote in his essay for the statewide competition that he won.

"I also have an interest in business. I want to learn about business because it fascinates me. I would also like to start a business, (specifically a sole proprietorship) in the field of graphic design soon. I have already free-lanced designed a business card and a logo. I hope that when I grow up, I will be an inventor."

Sununu said this was among the traditions he has enjoyed most about this job and it was his last.

Sununu will retire after his fourth term ends in January.

Flockton got a huge sendoff from the student body at his middle school on Tuesday.

"Everybody was looking to give me high-fives; that was pretty cool," Flockton said.

A member of the student council and reporter for his school newspaper, Flockton already attracted attention at the State House, promoting a new design for the state flag.

The New Hampshire House of Representatives earlier in the 2024 session killed a bill that called for a different design but Flockton said he's already got a state legislator working on a new bill for the 2025 session..
