Middle school students invited to compete in 2nd annual ‘Water Tower Showdown’

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Calling all middle school students! The second annual Water Tower Showdown is kicking off on July 13 and event organizers are encouraging local students to dive into the competition.

The Water Tower Showdown features the Roanoke, Bedford, and Lynchburg water providers. Visionaries will have the chance to design and build a water tower model.

Middle school students, specifically rising 6th and 8th graders, from public, private, or home schools are invited to design a tower that holds one gallon of water. The water must also drain quickly and be aesthetically pleasing.

But there’s a twist.

The design can have a theme and participants can choose any materials they want to build their towers and to spark creativity.

Starting at 9 a.m. at the Bedford Regional Water Authority, students will present their creations. The first-place winner will take home a $75 gift card, the second-place team will get a $50 gift card, and the third-place winner will win a $25 gift card.

Event organizers said only the first 30 students will be accepted and there is a limit of five teams per school. All participants must register by June 23 and complete the form online.
