Police were called at 9:18 Friday night for a report of an attempted abduction. According to investigators, a woman was looking after a group of children in a motel room when the suspect, a 27-year-old man from Mancelona Township, opened a window and tried to pull one of the children out of the window.

According to the sheriff’s office, the babysitter was able to fight back and pull the child back in. The suspect allegedly returned and entered the room through the door but was forced out by the babysitter’s husband. The suspect was held until deputies arrived and took him into custody.

In a statement, Antrim County Sheriff Kevin Hoch praised the adults who kept their cool and the neighbors who stepped in to help.

“Without their interventions, this crime could have had a tragic outcome,” Hoch stated.

The suspect will not be identified until he is formally arraigned. The man was taken to the Antrim County jail and will be charged with one count of attempted kidnapping/child enticement, first-degree home invasion and breaking and entering with intent, deputies say. He will also be charged as a habitual offender.
