New Mexico expanding medication-assisted treatment at public health offices

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico Department of Health will start offering medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder at more than 30 public health offices around the state.

“More than 2 million people in the U.S. have an opioid use disorder and we know many New Mexicans struggle with this addiction,” New Mexico Health Secretary Patrick Allen said in a press release. “We are proud that we can now offer MAT services in all four regions of the state.”

The state previously offered outpatient opioid use disorder treatment in Las Cruces, Albuquerque, and Roswell. Now, the department of health is expanding those sorts of services.

MAT is aimed at helping people who want to cut their dependence on opioids. Treatment relies on Buprenorphine (or the brand-name equivalent, Suboxone) to help reduce opioid cravings. In New Mexico, the department of health says it does not dispense Methadone.

The latest expansion of treatment services also includes telehealth treatment options. The state offers a helpline at: 1-833-SWNURSE (1-833-796-8773). That helpline is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on the weekends from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. More information at treatment options can be found at this link.
