Self-defense claim under investigation after deadly shooting in JC Napier area

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man is claiming self-defense following a Saturday shooting that left another man dead in the JC Napier area, officials said.

Metro Nashville dispatch said the shooting was called in shortly before 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 25 from the 600 block of Charles E. Davis Boulevard.

Minor critically injured, man charged following Kentucky shooting

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), a 23-year-old admitted to the shooting and told detectives that he shot the victim – identified as 29-year-old Bryan Lewis – because he “believed that Lewis was about to shoot him.”

Officials said a preliminary investigation indicates that the 23-year-old suspect was carrying a box of canned goods to an apartment when Lewis approached him on a scooter and accused the suspect of shooting at him on a previous date, which the 23-year-old reportedly denied.

The 23-year-old suspect told officers that Lewis began to get off the scooter and appeared to attempt to pull a gun from his waistband. That’s when the 23-year-old said he dropped the box of canned goods, pulled his own gun, and shot Lewis.

According to officers at the scene, first responders transported Lewis to a local hospital, where he later died. Meanwhile, another person reportedly went to the hospital in a private vehicle to be treated for superficial injuries following the incident.

Detectives reported the 23-year-old fled the scene, but later surrendered at police headquarters.

During an interview with detectives, the 23-year-old allegedly claimed that “he had received word from others that Lewis was going to kill him.”

No charges have been placed against the 23-year-old in regard to the shooting, police said.  However, he was arrested on an unrelated outstanding domestic assault warrant.

This news comes two days after another shooting was reported in the J.C. Napier neighborhood. That incident, which occurred just after 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 23 in the 100 block of Fain Street, led to the death of 63-year-old Alan Howard and the arrest of 30-year-old Timothy Gibbons Jr., according to officials.
