Methamphetamine found in ice chest containing fish: CBP

CALEXICO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Nearly 50 pounds of drugs were discovered inside an ice chest full of fish over the weekend, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers said Wednesday.

According to CBP, the incident happened Sunday around 8:39 p.m. Officers stopped a 34-year-old man driving a 2021 sedan through the SENTRI lane at the Calexico West Port of Entry and referred him and his vehicle for further examination.

Officers saw there were “irregularities” in an ice chest containing fish in the vehicle’s trunk during the secondary inspection. A K-9 team alerted them to the presence of narcotics.

CBP said there were 25 packages containing methamphetamine hidden inside the ice chest, weighing a total of over 47 pounds. The drugs and the car were seized by CBP officers, while the driver was handed over to the custody of Homeland Security Investigations.

The seizures were part of Operation Apollo, a partnership between CBP and federal, state, local, tribal and territorial agencies to target the smuggling of fentanyl into the United States.
