Metairie residents weigh in on proposed bill to remove vehicle inspection stickers

METAIRIE, La. (WGNO) — Louisiana’s brake tag requirement has been long debated by many, and that discussion has now reached the House with HB 344, which would do away with motor vehicle inspections altogether.

For some residents, this bill passing would not only save time but also provide some much-needed extra cash.

“Well, that would save money in your pocket, and it don’t make sense for the brake tags because now they got the brake tags, and they want the things on the back of the license plate and like what does it mean? It’s just more money,” said Metairie resident Darrell Rhea.

On the other hand, some believe brake tags are needed and that the bill would only cause more harm on the road as vehicles may be less regulated.

“It’s for safety and we have to be careful. They check. I see it just right now. They check everything,” said Metairie resident Dimidrios Vatakas.

Others are somewhere in the middle.

“You don’t want someone with an unsafe car on the highway, right you know? You want to make sure everything works. Brakes, signals, horn, everything, right? But on the other hand, like new cars, I mean why do I need a brake tag for a brand-new car. I mean everything should work on a brand-new car. If not, that’s why you got a warranty,” said Metairie resident Keith Bordelon.

If the bill were to eventually become law, many wonder how the state would replace the money brake tags generated.

“What do they always do? They tax us, right? Keep taxing the middle class. I’m assuming that taxes are probably going to raise to fill in the budget, fill in that hole,” said Bordelon.
