EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — A 39-year-old woman was shot and killed late Monday evening, April 1, in Mesilla and the Mesilla Marshal’s Office has identified a person of interest.

The mayor of Mesilla held a press conference on Tuesday, April 2 about the incident.

Sgt. Tres Diaz, with the Mesilla Marshal’s Office, gave details about what led up to the shooting.

Diaz said just after 8 p.m., a 911 call was placed about a woman who had been shot on University Avenue near Zia Middle School.

Diaz said the caller advised that the woman exited a gray SUV, was barefoot and had been shot.

Deputies from the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office and the Mesilla Marshal’s Office arrived on scene to find the woman unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds. She later died at the scene.

Diaz said the suspect’s vehicle was located in Sunland Park and has been identified to be Oscar Rene Sandoval, age 59, from Chaparral, New Mexico.
