Update: NM fugitive arrested in Mexico after alleged murder of his wife in Mesilla

After a nine-day manhunt, Oscar Sandoval is in the custody of the U.S. Marshals and back on United States soil.

Sandoval, who was charged with first-degree murder in the April 1 death of his wife, 39-year-old Sheireen Al Jibury, was apprehended in Ciudad Juarez, according to a spokesman with the U.S. Marshals.

The Mesilla Marshal's Office led the investigation, with the assistance of multiple law enforcement agencies across the Borderland. The Mesilla Marshal's Office issued an arrest warrant for Sandoval, 57, on April 2.

Mesilla Mayor Russel Hernandez scheduled a 4 p.m. news conference, where Lieutenant Ben Azcarate confirmed Sandoval was taken into custody at about 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10.

Jail records show Sandoval was booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on Wednesday afternoon. He did not have a court hearing scheduled as of Wednesday evening.

"In conjunction with the United States Marshals Service, Oscar Renee Sandoval was taken into custody," Azcarate said.

The U.S. Marshal's Office said in a release that Sandoval was captured in Juarez by Mexican authorities following a multi-agency investigation that led investigators across the border. According to the U.S. Marshals, "Agencia Estatal de Investigacion de Chihuahua” (AEI) located and placed Sandoval into custody," on Wednesday.

Sandoval was then extradited by Mexican officials and placed into the custody of the United States Marshals Service District of New Mexico at the Port of Entry in Santa Teresa, according to a release.

"The United States Marshal Service in the District of New Mexico, is committed to protecting our communities by relentlessly locating, pursuing, and apprehending fugitives – domestically and internationally. The arrest of Oscar Sandoval is an example of the collective partnerships and dedication demonstrated by local, state, and federal law enforcement personnel committed to protecting the citizens that we serve," acting U.S. Marshal Russell Lashley said in a statement.

At approximately 8:16 p.m. on April 1, a 911 call was received by Mesilla Valley Regional Dispatch Authority advising that a woman had allegedly been shot. According to witnesses, a woman exited a grey SUV barefoot near Zia Middle School and was shot.

According to court documents, witnesses said Sandoval, who resides in El Paso, chased Al Jibury and allegedly fired four more shots. Sandoval then fled west on University Avenue toward Mesilla in a 2016 Ford Explorer. The witness remained in her own vehicle and saw Al Jibury fall to the ground on the dirt shoulder off the eastbound lane of University Avenue. Sandoval turned toward the witness, who backed her car away in fear for her own safety. Sandoval did not point his gun at the witness, according to court filings.

Deputies from the Marshal's Office and the Doña Ana County Sheriffs Department arrived at 8:22 p.m. to find Al Jibury unresponsive with possibly four gunshot wounds. She died of the injuries at the scene.

Sandoval was last seen on April 1 on private security cameras in Sunland Park. His vehicle was found and seized by the Doña Ana County Sheriffs Department in Sunland Park.

The vehicle was registered to Sandoval and the witness identified him as the man who exited the vehicle and shot the victim four times.
