Mesa Marin Sports Complex shooting details revealed: docs

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The brothers spent the evening playing softball at the Mesa Marin Sports Complex, enjoying the camaraderie and the exercise.

Afterward, they hung out in the parking lot. A stranger approached and asked if they could call him a ride.

They offered him a ride home instead, and the three engaged in pleasant, casual conversation.

As they talked, the stranger pulled a gun and shot Mario Bravo Jr. in the face, Bravo’s brother told detectives. He said the stranger, whom he knew only as “Ulysses,” then turned the gun on him and he ducked, the round hitting a window of his parked SUV.

The gunman ran, turning and firing more shots as he bolted across the parking lot, the brother told investigators according to newly-released court documents. Other witnesses reported seeing the shooter get in a car that sped away from the sports complex off Highway 178 near Bedford Green Drive.

Bravo, 41, was pronounced dead at the scene of the Sept. 29, 2021, shooting.

Earlier this month, charges including murder were brought against Ulices Alonso, 21, and Eric Faria, 20.

Also charged under the same case number are Francisco Alejandro Garcia, Uriel Ramirez and Ulyses Zelayandia. They face charges of attempted murder, among other offenses.

The court documents refer to another shooting in 2021 that left three people wounded in east Bakersfield.

A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled Friday but is likely to be postponed.

Bravo had gang-related tattoos, the reports say, but his brother told detectives neither Bravo nor he were active gang members.

One witness said he played on Bravo’s team that evening and didn’t see him argue or otherwise have issues with anyone.

Another witness, according to the documents, hear a couple loud “pops” he at first took for fireworks. Then he saw someone running southwest through the parking lot, firing several shots as he bounded toward a waiting car, he told investigators.
