Mesa County Commissioners join lawsuit against state

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) — The Mesa County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday morning to join in on a lawsuit being filed against the State of Colorado.

The lawsuit, filed by Douglas and El Paso counties on April 15, seeks damages regarding House Bills 19-1124 and 23-1100. The bills prevent local governments from cooperating with the federal government on immigration matters.

“The bottom line… is we support the rule of law,” said Commissioner Janet Rowland. “It’s incomprehensible to me that the state would pass laws that prohibit our law enforcement officers from following the law.”

All three commissioners voiced their support for joining the lawsuit, citing support for local law enforcement and a desire to ensure they’re able to do their job.

“The current law… ties our local law enforcement’s hands to communicate with federal officials on immigration, which we think is counterproductive,” said Commissioner Cody Davis. “It puts our law enforcement officials, people in our community at risk and it doesn’t allow for local flexibility.”

In February, Mesa County Commissioners approved a resolution declaring Mesa County will not become a sanctuary county.
