Menominee man gets prison time for threats over government assistance process

MENOMINEE, Mich. (WJMN) — A Menominee man will spend years in prison after making threats over the phone to a state employee, according to the Menominee County Prosecuting Attorney.

In a Monday release, Menominee Prosecutor Jeff Rogg told Local 3 that Asher Allan McNeil had been sentenced to three to five years in prison last week after pleading guilty to a charge of Attempted Threat of Terrorism.

Rogg said the crime happened last October when 41-year-old McNeil was on the phone with a representative of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, while he was trying to request help for his furnace.

We’re told McNeil reacted negatively when the process for receiving help was described to him, becoming irate and unreasonable. Rogg told Local 3 that McNeil was transferred to a manager at MDHHS, and screamed that “if CPS comes over somebody’s gonna get shot,” that “they better bring M-16s with drum magazines,” and that he was “armed with explosives.”

Rogg said McNeil continued his threats when police arrived to his home, and that he had access to weapons that would allow him to follow through on the threats.

“Threats to carry out shootings and injure or kill MDHHS personnel, who are trying to fulfill their mission and provide help to needy families, are reprehensible,” said Rogg. “Thanks to the quick work of my law enforcement partners, this threat remained just that and did not turn into a tragic event.”
