New members of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo animal family

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo (CMZoo) has expanded its animal family by welcoming two four-month-old siblings of a species previously not housed at the zoo: the Patagonian Mara. On Wednesday, April 10, the zoo unveiled the new names of the brother and sister: “Poa” and “Briza.”

The names, chosen by their social media followers, represent grasses found in South America, the natural habitats of these Argentinian rodents. Poa is the male, and he’s slightly smaller than his sister and has a darker gray hue on his face and back. His sister, Briza, is larger and mostly lighter in color and has a slightly reddish tone on the fur around her neck and chest.

According to CMZoo, Poa and Briza are friendly, brave, and curious. Poa likes to sit in his keepers’ laps while eating snacks, while Briza is more shy around new people, though she warms up to them when a snack is offered. Briza is a confident explorer and will usually lead the way into new spaces.

Poa and Briza are currently getting accustomed to their new space and care team, and in the coming week, they will make their debut outside in the My Big Backyard attraction.
