Melbourne man killed in crash; police believe medical episode involved

MELBOURNE — An 81-year-old Melbourne man was killed Saturday after he suffered a medical episode at the wheel, veered off the road and slammed into a tree, police said Sunday.

Gary Hurd was driving a 2012 Nissan Frontier near the intersection of Parkway Drive and Croton Road at 11:20 a.m. Saturday when he had an undetermined medical episode and lost consciousness, Melbourne police said.

The vehicle was traveling westbound on Parkway Drive when it rolled off the road near Croton Road and struck the tree. Paramedics responded within minutes. Hurd, the only person in the Frontier, died from his injuries at Melbourne Regional Medical Center, police reported.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be involved in the crash, traffic homicide investigators said.
