Mega Millions player just misses $331M jackpot — but still wins big in North Carolina

A lottery player just missed a massive jackpot prize — but still won big in North Carolina.

The Mega Millions player is set to get richer after buying a ticket that matched all but one number picked in the May 10 drawing. Since the player spent an extra dollar on the Megaplier option, the $10,000 prize quadrupled to $40,000, the N.C. Education Lottery wrote on its website.

The winning numbers: white balls 13-22-26-32-65, with gold Mega Ball 18.

The lucky player matched four of the white balls and the gold ball on the ticket that came from Kings Mountain, a roughly 30-mile drive west from Charlotte. The ticket was sold at the Mountain Market on Waco Road, lottery officials told McClatchy News in an email.

The winner’s ticket was one number from scoring the jackpot prize, which stood at an estimated $331 million. No one hit the jackpot, and four $40,000 winners across the country snagged the biggest prizes the night of the drawing, according to the Mega Millions website.

As of about 12:45 p.m. May 13, no one in had come forward to claim the North Carolina prize. The deadline to cash in is about six months after the drawing, according to lottery rules.
