Meet the KC Zoo’s finalist in the World’s Favorite Penguin competition

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Zoo has announced the metro may have another world champion in its midst, according to a press release on Sunday.

The champion in question? A king penguin who goes by the name “Littlefoot.”

Littlefoot competed head-to-head with 47 other penguins in the Penguin International’s March of the Penguin Madness competition. After four rounds of voting, Littlefoot has made it to the final three, and he needs your help.

In order for him to be crowned the “Peng-Win Champion,” Kansas City needs to cast their votes on the Penguin International’s website, Facebook or Instagram. Voting is only open for a short period of time from Sunday to Monday.

Crowning the world’s favorite penguin is a fun way to educate the public, encourage people to learn more about penguins and inspire them to take action and protect them in the future, the Kansas City Zoo said.

According to the release, “the penguins nominated serve as ambassadors for their counterparts in native habitats.”

Littlefoot was nominated by the Kansas City Zoo care staff because of his “inspiring story of survival,” the release said.

When Littlefoot hatched, he failed to absorb his yolk, lost a lot of blood and was less than half his expected body weight. The veterinary teams and specialists took care of him immediately, but he was not showing signs of improvement, said the zoo’s release.

One day, however, Littlefoot had a “feed response” and unexpectedly showed signs of energy and a strong will to survive.

For the next few weeks, Littlefoot received extensive care and frequent feedings. Today, he is one of the larger, most friendly and most curious king penguins in the colony, according to the release.

To meet Littlefoot and all of the other animals, visit the Kansas City Zoo and Aquarium — open weekdays from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. and weekends from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
