Meechie Johnson announces return to Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Former Ohio State guard Meechie Johnson announced Tuesday that he is returning to the Buckeyes.

The Cleveland native played two seasons with South Carolina after starting his college career at OSU. With the Gamecocks this past season, Johnson started in 33 games, averaging 14.1 points and 4.1 rebounds a game. In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Johnson said he’s excited to play for newly installed head coach Jake Diebler.

“You can tell there’s a lot of momentum behind the program with Coach Diebler at the helm and I can’t wait to be part of this resurgence!” Johnson wrote.

At Ohio State, Johnson played 43 games in two seasons (2020-2022), making five starts. He shot over 34 percent from three-point range during his time with the Buckeyes. He said coming back home was a big reason for returning to Ohio State.

“Sure, I can be a leader and role model in communities elsewhere, but it doesn’t have the same impact as it does to be a role model in your hometown where I can tell kids when I meet and spend time with them that I’m from the same place as you,” Johnson said.

Johnson’s announcement comes on the heels of several Buckeyes announcing their return to Ohio State, including leading scorer Bruce Thornton.
