MDC to hold hiring fair

Mar. 23—The Metropolitan Detention Center, which for years has struggled to be fully staffed, is holding a hiring fair this week.

The event is Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon at Workforce Connection, 501 Mountain NE.

The jail is looking for candidates for corrections officers and corrections technicians.

Corrections officers will start out making $20.34 per hour while they are in training. Pay increases to $21.36 per hour once they complete the academy.

New officers are also eligible for hiring incentives up to $5,000, and officers with previous experience in corrections can get up to $10,000 in hiring incentives.

The positions come with full benefits, including health, dental and vision coverage. Officers also have a 25-year retirement plan and receive paid vacation and sick time.

On Wednesday, candidates will be able to participate in on-site interviews.

In recent years, MDC at times has reported vacancy rates around 50% and has been court-ordered to hire more corrections officers. At times, the jail has had to declare a state of emergency because of its staffing levels.
