McDuffie County Animal Services re-opens and holds adoption event

THOMSON, Ga. (WJBF) – The McDuffie County animal shelter has reopened after being closed for several months. Today, they held their first adoption event to help celebrate the reopening.

After a troubled past, The McDuffie Animal Services is reopening with a new owner helping people in the area find their next furry friend.

The event had food, free microchipping to anyone in the community, raffles for people to win, and many animals looking for their forever home.

“Cat and her team have been working so hard to turn things around here and really clear up their reputation in the area,” said Katie Ceraso: Better Together Georgia. “So, we are just here to help support them and enjoy this beautiful weather we are having. Hopefully, have some more adoptions. We have free microchipping available to the public. I think we have already done about ten today. Hopefully, we will get some more this afternoon.”

The owner was thrilled when a dog that had been there for six months was adopted.

“We had a great one get adopted. He has been here since October,” said Catherine Bohler, the owner of McDuffie Animal Services. “So, he did go home today. That’s what we have been wanting for him to find a home. So, he actually did get to go home today. “

The family who adopted the dog have been frequent visitors to the shelter and have always been drawn to him.

“He stole my brother’s heart,” said Crystal Sherrer, who adopted a dog. “He said he is going to be the shop dog and take him to the racetrack, and he’s going to have a good life. He just stole our hearts. He’s done stole my dad’s heart too.”

The shelter will have another event next Saturday at the Big Hart campground from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
