After 35 years with the Marysville Post Office, Jennifer Bergman is retiring from her clerk position.

Bergman joined the Post Office in September of 1988. She has always been a clerk with the Post Office and has also served as the officer in charge when there was not an appointed postmaster. During her over three decades-long career, Bergman has seen multiple changes to the Post Officer, worked with four postmasters and watched generations of Marysville residents grow up.

"I am grateful for this job and I'm going to miss seeing the people who come in," Bergman said. "It was a great job. It has changed quite a bit from when I first started."

The Marysville Post Office will have an open house-style retirement party for Bergman at 12:30 p.m. on May 31.

Bergman said she will miss the people who come into the Post Office the most. She said some customers became like family. Bergman said she got to watch certain customers grow from children to adults with their own children.

Bergman said she will always be grateful for her career with the Post Office. She said she was nine months pregnant when she was hired, and the postmaster at the time held her position until she came back from maternity leave. She said she's raised three children with the Post Office.

As well as serving as the Post Office clerk and acting as officer in charge when necessary, Bergman would be called to other Post Offices to cover if a clerk was unavailable. She said she probably worked at 10 to 15 different Post Offices, with Marysville being her homebase.

"I learned a lot from that," Bergman said. "You would think with it being the Post Office, everything would be the same, but each one had its differences."

Bergman remembers the days when the mail carriers would come in and sort all the mail before going to deliver it. She said before automatic sorters were implemented, the carriers would be at the Post Office for three hours. Now, they are only there for less than an hour. Also, when Bergman started, stamps were only 25 cents. She said stamps now run for 68 cents.

Marysville Postmaster Lisa Helewski said that although she's only been with the Marysville Post Office for a year, she has seen that Bergman is a great co-worker and person. She said with the amount of knowledge Bergman has, it will be very hard to find someone to fill her shoes.

"She is the go-to girl for a lot of things around here," Helewski said. "I've enjoyed the time I had working with her."

Bergman said she plans to spend more time with her family, especially her husband and their seven grandchildren. She said she has a family vacation to Pigeon Forge coming up that she is looking forward to.
