Maryland Matters names new editor to continue outlet’s legacy of excellence
Steve Crane, a veteran journalist who covered the Maryland State House in parts of three different decades and has also led coverage of Maryland government and politics in various other roles, took over as editor-in-chief of Maryland Matters on Monday.
He returns to Maryland after 12 years spent covering Arizona politics. He’s replacing Danielle E. Gaines, who resigned as editor-in-chief of Maryland Matters in January but remains an occasional contributor to the website.

Beginning in 1986, Crane worked as a reporter and editor overseeing Maryland coverage at The Washington Times, before editing students in the University of Maryland’s Capital News Service bureaus in Annapolis and then Washington, D.C., for nearly 12 years. He also served as an assistant dean at the University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism.
In 2012, Crane founded the Washington bureau of Arizona State University’s Cronkite News Service, and was responsible for students’ coverage of the federal government and, for this year, the Arizona Capitol. His students’ work has won awards from Investigative Reporters and Editors, the Society of Professional Journalists, the RFK Journalism Awards, Hearst Journalism Awards, Editor & Publisher, the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, and more.
Crane is a longtime Prince George’s County resident.
Josh Kurtz, Maryland Matters’ founding editor, who had been running the website since mid-January, remains with the publication as a reporter and editor.
