Marshalls, 'needed and welcomed here' opens in Somerset County

It was a lively morning Thursday at 1534 N. Center Ave. when Marshalls opened its doors for the first time.

There was a ribbon cutting, and a gift given to the first person in a long line that began to form at about 7:30 a.m. The new retail store opened at 8 a.m. and the line snaked along the sidewalk past the store. By 8:02 a.m., the parking lot in front of the store was nearly full. Cars continued to roll in slowly as drivers looked for rare parking spaces.

It felt a little like Black Friday used to be.

Several people in line said Marshalls and its reputation for good merchandise at a decent price is "needed and welcomed here." Most said they usually drive to Richland or Greensburg specifically to buy items in the Marshalls stores there. On their minds Thursday was a leisurely shopping day with family and friends and thoughts of going to a local eatery later.
