Conservative Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia said she will file her motion to fire fellow Republican U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson of Shreveport next week, accusing the speaker of ceding power to Democrats and President Joe Biden.

"Mike Johnson is not capable of that job," Greene said Wednesday during a press conference on the Captiol steps. "He has proven it again and again."

Greene's move to oust Johnson is unlikely to succeed after Democratic leaders in the House led by Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York said Tuesday they will come to the speaker's rescue.

But Greene and fellow rogue Republican Congressman Thomas Massie of Kentucky said the Democrats' support illustrates what they call Johnson's "betrayal" of Republicans.

"(Jeffries) gives him a warm hug and big sloppy kiss because Mike Johnson is giving them everything they want," Greene said.

Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) hold a press conference outside the U.S. Capitol on potential motion to vacate against Speaker of the House Mike Johnson on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.

In a statement, Johnson condemned the action of Greene and her planned motion to vacate.

"This motion is wrong for the Republican Conference, wrong for the institution and wrong for the country," Johnson said in the statement.

Massie said Johnson should resign before the vote, accusing the speaker of "complete capitulation" to Democrats.

"He's clinging to power by clingt to Democrats," Massie said. "We're going to give him one more weekend to think about (resigning).

"He's a lost ball in tall weeds. He's over his head. This is where we should take out the garbage; take out the trash."

Greene and Massie said the final straw for them was Johnson's support of the $95 billion in foreign aid for Ukraine, Israel and other U.S. allies in their war efforts.

"He gave more money away while our border remains open," Greene said.

Greene said she wants every Republican and Democrat on the record with next week's vote despite the likely futile exercise to oust Johnson.

"I want a list of names," she said. "The American people deserve that list."

Johnson was elected as the first speaker from Louisiana last fall after weeks of chaos in the House following the ouster of former Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California triggered by a small group of conservative Republicans of which Greene belongs.
