Maricopa County attorney says she will support Donald Trump for president

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said while she didn't agree with him on all of his positions, she would support Donald Trump's campaign for the presidency.

She also said she had not sought Trump's endorsement in her own re-election campaign.

Mitchell stated her support for the former president while responding to questions at a news conference Wednesday in Phoenix, on the same day President Joe Biden was in the Phoenix area.

Biden and Trump both won their respective primaries in Arizona Tuesday.

Over the past few years, in her role as county attorney, she had seen "a completely open border that fentanyl is pouring over," Mitchell said.

Mitchell acknowledged that fentanyl came over the border during the Trump administration as well.

"I don't agree with Donald Trump on everything," Mitchell said. "But I do agree with the way he handled the border."

Trump recently urged Republicans to reject a bipartisan border bill that was in part crafted by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz.

Mitchell said she also agreed with the way Trump handled the economy, "and therefore, yes, I will be supporting him for president."

Mitchell, who is running for re-election, could face a challenger in the Republican primary.

About a Trump endorsement, "I don't know if he would do that or not," Mitchell said.
