March can bring everything from snow to tornadoes

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – It certainly feels and looks like spring right now.

We are even forecasting 80-degree temperatures for Thursday, March 14, but don’t get too used to it, because we may see some 20s for lows next week!

That’s March for you.

Pollen season arrives in Middle TN

Do you remember just two years ago on March 11-12 when Nashville recorded 2.8 inches of snow? One area near downtown received 4.7 inches. On the Cumberland Plateau near Allardt, there 6-7 inches of snow fell. After a low near 20 degrees, it was 68 degrees two days later!

On March 13, 1993, the storm of the century that we called “The Blizzard of ’93” brought the heaviest snowfall in history to the Cumberland plateau. Jamestown received the highest storm total ever measured in Middle Tennessee with a whopping 26 inches, while Crossville set a station record with a storm total of 20.5 inches of snow; Allardt set a one-day snowfall record with 14.1 inches.

We will never forget the terrible tornado outbreak just four years ago on the night of March 2-3, when one long-lived supercell thunderstorm dropped numerous tornadoes, including an EF-2 that killed one person in Benton County, the EF-3 that roared through Nashville from near John C. Tune Airport through Germantown and East Nashville, killing five people, and then tracking for a total of 60 miles through Wilson and Smith counties.

It then dropped down again as an EF-4 that killed 19 people in the Cookeville-Baxter area of Putnam County, where the most lives were lost.
