(KRON) — On Wednesday, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency approved plans to deploy 33 new speed safety cameras around the city. These cameras will be implemented to enforce speed limits and automatically mail fines, SFMTA said.

The specific locations of these speed safety cameras, according to SFMTA, are determined by the following:

  • Areas with school zones.

  • Areas known for speed racing.

  • Streets with a history of speed-related collisions.

  • Neighborhoods with vulnerable road users.

  • Areas that are geographically and socioeconomically diverse.

SFMTA said the implementation of these cameras provides unbiased enforcement and aids in reducing exposure to discrimination.

SFMTA said there will be camera warning signs within 500 feet of the cameras as well as at city entrance points. The majority of the speed limits for these speed cameras range from 30-40 mph, SFMTA said.

SFMTA plans to collect data by reading rear license plates for speeding vehicles only. Only individuals in authorized SFMTA job classifications will be able to access the data. Data from the cameras will only be retained for up to 120 days, SFMTA said.

According to SFMTA, these cameras are to be installed in late 2024 and will begin enforcement in early 2025. In the first 60 days of implementation, SFMTA plans to issue non-fee warning notices.

All in all, the project funded by SFMTA will cost up to $3 million annually.
