Manager helps man wanted for violent crimes evade police: MPD

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police say a woman was arrested after she helped a man wanted for attempted murder and other violent crimes evade detectives.

According to court records, 53-year-old Wonder Brooks has been charged with accessory after the fact.

Thursday at 12:30 p.m., a detective reportedly called Teamwear Graphics on Watman and spoke to Brooks about an employee named Amos Fleming.

According to Shelby County Sheriff’s Office records, Fleming has active warrants out for attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, vandalism, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and being a convicted felon in possession of a weapon.

Memphis Police say Brooks, a manager, confirmed that Fleming worked there but that he had gone out to lunch. Brooks allegedly told the detective she would call when Fleming returned.

According to police, the detective called back later and asked when Fleming was expected back. Brooks reportedly told the detective that Fleming was supposed to return at 12:30 but had “heard his name on the phone.”

Memphis Police say the detective and an agent with the U.S. Marshals Service went to the store to speak to Brooks and ask for any footage of Fleming leaving the store.

Police say Brooks told the detective that Fleming had overheard their conversation because he was in the office behind her. According to police, Brooks told the detective that they were on speaker during the earlier phone call but she “got up and walked away” when the detective told her about Fleming’s warrants.

Memphis Police say the detective spoke with another manager who allowed the detective to watch surveillance footage of the outside and inside of the store.

According to police, the detective watched footage that matched the time of the phone call with Brooks. The video reportedly shows Brooks talking on the phone and then going to a door. Police say when she came back, Fleming was following behind her.

Memphis Police say that video shows Fleming leaning against a table and listening to Brooks’ conversation with the detective.

Footage from outside the store reportedly showed Fleming walking to an “unknown black car” before turning around and going back into the store after someone got his attention. Memphis Police say Fleming is later seen leaving the store. He did not return, police say.

Brooks was booked into jail Thursday and given a $10,000 bond.
