Man wearing bulletproof vest, armed with rifle, two handguns, arrested in Monroe Walmart: Police

MONROE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — On Monday afternoon, an armed man was arrested in a Walmart, according to the Monroe Police Department.

The incident happened just after 1 p.m. on March 25 at the Walmart on W. Roosevelt Boulevard. Officers received several calls about a man wearing body armor and armed with a long rifle near the entrance of the store.

Authorities say they found and arrested the man inside the store without any issues. There is no danger to the public.

According to police, the man was wearing a bulletproof vest, carrying an assault-type rifle, a handgun tucked in his waistband, and a second handgun holstered on his side.

The man has been identified as 32-year-old Kemet Estep of Monroe. He is charged with Going Armed To The Terror Of The People.

Estep is awaiting bond at the Union County jail. This is still an active investigation.

Walmart has prohibited the open carry of firearms in its stores since 2019, with exceptions for law enforcement.
