Man shot, suspect in custody after Friday night shooting at Curry Pike apartment

Bloomington police say the victim of a Friday night shooting on Bloomington's west side is expected to survive, and two suspects are jailed in connection with the incident.

At 10:55 p.m. April 19, police went to an apartment in the 100 block of South Curry Pike, where a 56-year-old Bloomington man had been shot after a 911 call.

He suffered multiple gunshot wounds and underwent emergency surgery at IU Health Bloomington Hospital, according to a Bloomington Police Department news release.

The first officers to arrive provided medical care to the victim and others searched the area for two suspects who had run south from the area.

Six minutes after the call about the shooting, a BPD officer saw two people walking along a tree line between Highland Village Church and the Kroger parking lot. As the officer approached, the two ran into the grocery store parking lot, the news release said.

Police reported finding a handgun wrapped in a sweatshirt nearby.

They apprehended and arrested 35-year-old Devance Anthony Gayles of Michigan City on felony charges and a 19-year-old woman for misdemeanor resisting arrest and a probation violation.

The two were questioned, then booked into the Monroe County Jail early Saturday morning. Gayles faces preliminary charges of attempted murder, burglary, possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, criminal recklessness and pointing a firearm.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies and the Indiana State Police were at the scene to help search for the suspects and weapon.
