Man with gun near Fresno highway shot dead by CHP, police say

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – One person is dead after he was shot and killed by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in west Fresno on Friday, according to the Fresno Police Department.

Officers say at around 8:40 a.m., the CHP received a report about a man with a gun near the intersection of Jensen Avenue and Highway 41, near the freeway. The officers located the suspect and confirmed that the suspect had a gun. The suspect then moved towards a CHP officer, causing the officer to shoot at the suspect.

“At some point in time, the officer at that position felt that his life or the lives of his partners was in danger and utilized his department-issued weapon and discharged at the suspect in this case,” said Lt. Paul Cervantes with the Fresno Police Department.

The suspect was fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect killed has not been officially identified, but investigators say he is a Hispanic man in his late 20s or early 30s.

Officers add that there is nothing to suggest that the suspect fired any rounds before he was shot dead by the CHP officer. The Fresno Police Department’s Homicide Unit will be investigating the shooting.
