A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for causing a fatal accident while driving at high speed in the centre of Germany's southern city of Heilbronn.

The Heilbronn District Court gave the defendant a juvenile sentence for murder and attempted murder in three cases. The verdict is not yet final.

The court said the defendant, who was 20 years old at the time, was travelling at far too high a speed when he lost control of his 300-horsepower sports car in February last year.

In the 40-kilometre-per hour zone, he crashed into the car of a 42-year-old man at around 100 kilometres per hour. The man died in the wreckage of his car, his wife was seriously injured and their two children were slightly wounded.

Before the deadly collision, the young Turkish man, who was already known as a speeding offender, almost ran over a pedestrian who was only just able to get out of the way.
