Man found guilty of South Scranton stabbing

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A man has been found guilty of a South Scranton stabbing after a two-day trial.

Waliek Shakur Vereen, 27, was found guilty of stabbing a man twice in his stomach with a pocketknife on July 6, 2023, in the 1300 block of Prospect Avenue where Vereen lived, according to District Attorney Mark Powell.

Teen’s death under state police investigation

As stated in the affidavit, Vereen believed the victim had sexual intercourse with a woman he had relations with. Police said Vereen was nowhere to be found once they arrived at the scene of the stabbing.

The search for Vereen led to New York City and law enforcement arrested Vereen and released him to the custody of Scranton detectives.

Vereen was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon, simple assault, reckless endangerment, and harassment. Vereen could face more than 20 years in prison and fines of more than $25,000.
