Man escapes from PSP pursuit after ladders ‘fly off’ trailer

LEWIS TOWNSHIP, UNION COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— A man escaped a state police pursuit Monday due to ladders “flying off” his trailer.

At 7:25 a.m. Monday, state police say they attempted to stop a truck towing an enclosed trailer for speeding on Moll Road, Lewis Township.

Troopers said they identified the driver as 31-year-old Kalvin Showalter, from Mifflinburg, due to a pursuit that took place a few days prior.

As authorities tried to stop Showalter, they said he accelerated to 80 mph down the road and a chase ensued. Troopers said they chased Showalter for two miles until he turned off onto Pleasant Grove Road, a gravel road that turns into a logging road.

As troopers followed Showalter on Pleasant Grove Road, police say several metal ladders came “flying off” Showalter’s trailer and blocked the road. Unable to continue down Pleasant Grove Road, the release states troopers terminated the pursuit.

According to charging documents, several county units were called to assist with a search for Showalter. Officials on ATVs said they found Showalter’s truck about a mile up the road, but Showalter was nowhere to be found.

Search crews consisting of K9 Units, foot patrols, and aviation units began looking around the area in an attempt to find him; however, investigators say they were ultimately unable to find Showalter.

Showalter is being charged with felony fleeing and eluding officers, flight to avoid apprehension, driving with a suspended license, and other related traffic offenses. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
